As gas prices keep increasing, more and more people are looking for ways to save at the pumps. Despite the famous adage, “nothing in life is free”, we’ve actually found some practical ways to get free gas and save money at the pump.
Many fuel companies and grocery stores now offer reward programs to say thank you to loyal customers. Not only are they easy to sign up to, but in most cases, you just continue to shop normally. Plus, there are now other ways to get discounted fuel such as taking surveys and watching videos (we’ll get to these later).
In this article, we’ll share several ways you can save big time on your gas and the best options to choose from. What’s even better is that you can sign up for these programs today and in some cases, start saving instantly.
Read on for our tips about the best way to get free gas and save money at the pump.
The Shell Fuel Rewards Program
This is one of the most cost-saving rewards programs out there. If done right, this could save you a significant amount of money each time you fill up with gas.
To start off, simply sign up for the Shell Fuel Rewards Programme. You’ll get instant access to Gold member status, which automatically saves you 5c/gallon when you fill up at a participating Shell station.
Just be sure to swipe your rewards card or enter your Alt ID when you fill up. If you don’t do this, you won’t get the savings.
Other Ways to Save With Shell Fuel Rewards
Now saving 5c/gal is great, but we’re sure you want an even bigger discount. Well, it’s possible to achieve this thanks to the many ways to earn.
Shell has partnered with a wide range of brands to reward you as you shop. When you shop with one of the brands using your linked credit card, you accumulate more cents off per gallon.
There are many ways to save including:
- Online shopping
- Dining
- Event tickets
- Rental cars
- In-store rewards
- Featured offers
What’s more, you can even build up your savings by spending with different brands. For instance, you can save 10c/gal by dining at your favorite restaurant and a further 10c/gal when you buy event tickets.
By adding these together with your gold status discount, it accumulates to 25c/gal when you next fill up. Be sure to check out all of the participating brands because the more you shop with, the more you’ll save.
Finally, it’s worth remembering that the saving is capped at 20 gallons and is used as soon as you start pumping. So, it doesn’t matter if you fill up by one gal or 20.
The GetUpside Gas App
This is another awesome way of not only saving money on gas but also on groceries and at restaurants. If we’re honest, it’s something everyone should be using.
As soon as you download the free app you can save up to 25c/gal at all participating gas stations.
So How Does GetUpside Work?
When you need to fill up, go into the app and redeem an offer on gas. You then have four hours to fill up at a participating gas station using a linked credit card.
The offer is usually up to 50 gallons so, if you want to help a family member or friend out, then do this.
Go to the station together and share the discount. Once one of you has filled up, give the pump to them. As long as they don’t put the handle back on the pump in between filling up your cars, you’ll both save money.
But GetUpside has another advantage.
Every time you fill up you can earn cashback as well. The money is put in your account instantly and you can cash out at any time.
The Kroger Fuel Rewards Program
You can save up to $1/gal when you shop at Kroger. All you have to do is sign up for a shoppers card and use it each time you shop with them.
You’ll earn 1 fuel point for every $1 spent and you can start redeeming when you have accumulated 100 points. In case you’re wondering, this will save you 10c/gal.
You can earn fuel points any way you wish to shop including
- In-store or online with pickup
- Delivery
- Ship through website
You’ll also earn 2 points for every $1 spent on most gift cards. This can come in very handy for birthdays or especially around the holidays.
Plus, you can even earn points on prescriptions.
There is no limit to the number of fuel points you can earn each month, but, they will expire. For example, the points you earn in May will expire on June 30th.
So, it’s important you remember this and ensure you fill up at a participating gas station.
You should also be aware that certain items are excluded from earning points in some states. These can include, alcohol and milk products. So, ensure you read the T&C’s on their website first.
Finally, keep an eye out for offers and promotions to earn points faster. This can include a 2x fuel points weekend where you earn double.
